Why an SSL Certificate is so important
SSL Certificates give your visitors peace of mind when visiting your website.
What is an SSL Certificate
An SSL Certificate encrypts your website data so it is not sent over the internet in plain text html for all to see.
When you visit a website that has an SSL Certificate installed, there will be a padlock icon to the right of the web address showing that the website is secure. Some websites keep their entire website secure but some only secure the checkout page. It is best to secure the entire website for your visitors as you may have contact forms etc. where you want your visitors to input their personal information. If this page is not secured with the SSL Certificate, your visitors information is not encrypted when passing through the internet.
For eCommerce Websites
If you use Payment Gateways such as Stripe & some PayPal Services, your customers will be diverted to these Payment Gateways Secure Servers (Hosted Payments Page) to complete their purchase. However, it is still recommended for you to secure your website with an SSL Certificate.
If your website is not secure this could deter potential customers before they even get as far as the Secure Payment Gateway Servers. They may not understand that continuing to proceed is safe when they are diverted to the Secure Payment Gateways’ Servers. Also, some browsers can show a message that the website is not secure and give end-users the option to “go back to safety” – the search results page. This will drive potential customers to your competitors.
Not just for eCommerce
SSL Certificates are not just for eCommerce websites where your visitors purchase goods and services. Securing your informational website with an SSL Certificate is beneficial in putting your visitors at ease when using your website. Your website may have a Contact Form and an SSL Certificate will keep your visitors personal information secure.
An SSL Certificate will also keep your login details safe for your Content Management System.
Google looks highly on secure websites so your chances of ranking above your Competitors increases if you have an SSL Certificate installed.
It’s better to be safe, than sorry. For a small annual fee for an SSL Certificate you could gain higher ranking and more customers, happy customers. Your customers will trust you if you have a trusted website.
